Steak Dreams Bologna Reality

by Arethia Cowden

We all have dreams of wanting better for our lives and for our families; we want the fancy cars, beautiful homes; stylish clothes and hair jewelry, important friends with connections. You dream every night about wanting those things and more. But here you are stuck in your reality. The hand me downs and the second hands are your reality. You watch your less then new; far from perfect T.V. and see those beautiful people with their shinny hair and teeth and you say "One day that will be me"; then you hear your mother call you down for breakfast and you see the reality; you see your life like a re-run of "Good Times" the sitcom from the 70's. As your eating your oat meal you take your imagination to a rich family and your part of that family; eating real bacon & eggs with waffles and using real butter with thick creamy syrup and orange juice not tang. Then in your ears you hear "You'r going to miss that bus; if you don't hurry up" and then you are back to your reality.
You ask your mother why are there poor people; why are there rich people and why is there people like me who have steak dreams; bologna reality? Your mother can't answer your questions and she only says "be thankful for what you do have". You go to your small unpainted room of gloom and lay on your second hand bed that has a mattress that smells of sweat from the previous owner and you yet again take your mind to a place that has a beautiful painted room with new bedroom furniture and a closet filled with designer clothes and shoes and you have a vanity that has a gold trim border where you can comb your hair and see how well together you really are; then you hear "Give me another week; I promise I will have the money then" you soon realize that yet again your steak dreams bologna reality. No way your thinking can this life be what others dream about; can they?
Steak dreams bologna reality; how can your dreams become your reality? Work hard; never give up; believe in yourself. This story I created was about a little girl wanting more out of life and that is fine; but what happens when that little girl grows up and she is still pretending to be what she isn't? Don't pretend to be who your not; don't say your home is a mansion when you know its a shack; don't say you have connections when you really don't. Don't say your steak when you are only bologna.
I am talking to whom ever is in need of this blog today. If we start living our lives our true lives then doors will open up for us and your taste will truly change. A true friend will accept you no matter what. Remember that!
